Eugene Patrick Powers
August 30, 1917 - June 25, 2010
West Palm Beach, FL- Mr. Eugene Patrick Powers, 92, formerly of Savannah, died peacefully on Friday, June 25, 2010 at his residence in Noreen McKeen Towers.
Mr. Powers was born August 30, 1917 in Savannah, the fifth of nine children born to his parents. He attended Marist School in Savannah and St. Charles College in Baltimore, MD. In 1937, he graduated from St. Mary's Seminary College in Baltimore, MD with a degree in Philosophy. He joined the Ohio National Guard and served in the U.S. Army as First Lieutenant during World War II in both the European and the Pacific theaters. After he was discharged from the military, he married Edna Hettel in Washington, DC. He returned to Savannah to join C.F. Powers Insurance Agency where he worked as an insurance agent and bookkeeper until he retired. Mr. Powers served in the Georgia General Assembly for a one year term in 1965.
He was active in numerous fraternal, religious and social organizations. Mr. Powers was a long time member and previous Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 631. He was a member and previous Commander of the American Legion Post 135. He was a proud member of the Hibernian Society and the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee. He was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars. After his retirement, he volunteered weekly for 20 years at the Social Apostolate soup kitchen. He was a longtime communicant of St. James Catholic Church and more recently, a daily communicant at the Noreen McKeen Catholic chapel. His wife, Edna Powers and his parents, Charles and Loretta Powers, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his children, Denise Powers and her husband Dan Sweitzer of Rome, GA, Maureen MacLaughlin and her husband Douglas MacLaughlin of West Palm Beach, FL, and Gene Powers and his wife Sarah Powers of Portstewart, Northern Ireland; grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Sweitzer, Grace MacLaughlin, and Hannah, Rory and Colin Powers; also surviving is his brother, Col. ret. Terence Powers and his wife Carolyn Powers, and sister, Marianne Seyden. He is blessed with many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Powers will be remembered as a faithful Catholic, a devoted father who cherished his extended family and a man who enjoyed a good joke.
Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with a Rosary Service at 5:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 1, 2010 at St. James Catholic Church.
Interment: Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
